This tutorial was written using Paint Shop Pro 7.

You will need to download these selections and save them in a folder of your choice.

Feel free to use these patterns if you want.


Start by opening the 4 tiles above and setting them aside.

Open a new image 400 x 450 with a transparent background

Name your first layer hat back go to "selections" "load from disk" and find your selections folder open the hatback.sel and using the flood fill bucket, set your foreground pattern to the hattile.jpg and fill the selection go to "selections" "invert" and "effects" "3d effects" "drop shadow" with these settings...

Vertical=0 Horizontal=0 Opacity=100 Blur=50 Color=4D4131

Go to "selections" "select none" or (Ctrl + D) on your keyboard to deselect.

Add a new layer and name it back bow, "selections" "load from disk" and open the bowback.sel, with your foreground pattern set to whitetile.jpg fill with the pattern, while still selected choose your retouch tool  using these settings in the "tool options" pallet...

Shape=Round Size=20 Hardness=0 Opacity=20 Step=10 Density=20 Darken RGB

Run your mouse along the edges to darken like so...

Deselect, Add a new layer and name it back bow 2, "selections" "load from disk" and open the bowback2.sel, fill with the same pattern and same settings on the retouch tool darken the edges like so.....

Deselect, add a new layer and name it hat brim back, "selections" "load from disk" and open hatbrimback.sel "selections" "invert" and "effects" "3d effects" "drop shadow" using the same settings as before. Deselect.

Add a new layer and name it head, "selections" "load from disk" and open the head.sel Change your Foreground color to #EDCDAB and fill the selection go to "selections" "invert" and "effects" "3d effects" "drop shadow" using the same settings but change the color to #B28356. Deselect.

Add a new layer and name it cheeks "selections" "load from disk" and open the cheeks.sel fill with a good cheek color, I used #ED8B8B, deselect and go to "effects" "blur" "gaussian blur" Radius= 8

Add a new layer and call it nose, "selections" "load from disk" and open the nose.sel go to "selections" "modify" "feather" number of pixels= 4 and fill with your same skin color, #EDCDAB, deselect go to "effects" "3d effects" "inner bevel" and apply the default "round" inner bevel changing the "smoothness" to 80, apply this inner bevel twice, then go to "effects" "blur" "gaussian blur" changing the radius to 2.

Add a new layer and name it eyes "selections" "load from disk" and open the eyes1.sel fill with white, on the same layer load the eyes2.sel and fill with #A78759, on the same layer load the eyes3.sel and fill with black. deselect and go to "effects" "3d effects" "drop shadow" using these settings...

Vertical=-1 Horizontal=-1 Opacity=100 Blur=3 Color=Black

then apply another drop shadow with these settings

Vertical=1 Horizontal=1 Opacity=100 Blur=3 Color=White

while still on the eyes layer choose your retouch tool 

Shape=Round Size=3 Hardness=0 Opacity=20 Step=10 Density=20 Lighten RGB

zoom in on your canvas and make 2 small highlights in her eyes.

Now we are going to make her hair using my curly selections and filling them with different shades of brown.. :-)

Add a new layer and name it hair
"selections" "load from disk" and open the hair1.sel
fill this selection with your foreground color at #6B542F
deselect, "selections" "load from disk" and open the hair2.sel
fill this selection with your foreground color at #907448
deselect, "selections" "load from disk" and open the hair3.sel
fill this selection with your foreground color at #986F2E
deselect, "selections" "load from disk" and open the hair4.sel
fill this selection with your foreground color at #815A1D
deselect, "selections" "load from disk" and open the hair5.sel
fill this selection with your foreground color at #9F7D47

And after all that your hair should look like this...

Deselect and add a new layer, name it hat brim front "selections" "load from disk" and open the hatbrimfront.sel fill with the same hattile.jpg, then while still selected, go to "selections" "invert" and "effects" "3d effects" "drop shadow" using these settings...

Vertical=6 Horizontal=4 Opacity=100 Blur=35 Color=4D4131

Deselect, add a new layer and name it bows1 "selections" "load from disk" and open the bows1.sel fill with the whitetile.jpg, same as the other bow, while still selected, choose your retouch tool  with these settings

Shape=Round Size=20 Hardness=0 Opacity=20 Step=10 Density=20 Darken RGB

and run your mouse around the edges to darken them a little.

Deselect and add a new layer, name it bows2 "selections" "load from disk" and open the bows2.sel fill with the same whitetile.jpg and deselect go to "effects" "3d effects" "inner bevel" and use these settings

Width=8 Smoothness=50 Depth=2 Ambience=19 Shininess=0 Color=White Angle=180 Intensity=45 Elevation=25

Add a new layer and name it pants1 "selections" "load from disk" and open the pants1.sel fill this selection with my jeanstile.jpg, I changed the pattern size to 40%

while still selected go to "selections" "invert" then "effects" "3d effects" "drop shadow" with these settings

Vertical=4 Horizontal=4 Opacity=100 Blur=35 Color=60606E

Deselect, add a new layer and name it pants2 "selections" "load from disk" and open the pants2.sel Fill with the same pattern, "selections" "invert" and apply the same drop shadow. Deselect.
