You will need to download my Boy Selections and unzip them to a folder of your choice.
If you are doing both tutorials, you must save the boy and girl selections in seperate folders. some of the selections are named the same for both kids.
This was made using Paint Shop Pro 7
Here are the tiles I used to make the boy but you can use any tiles or colors you want

Both of these kids were made on one layer. There are not that many selections...
Open a new image 300 x 650 on a transparent background
Go to "selections" "load from disk" and open the shoes.sel, fill with your choice of color I used dark brown #705138. Go to "effects" "3d effects" "inner bevel" and apply the default round settings. Deselect
"selections" "load from disk" open the shirt.sel and fill with the color/pattern of your choice. Deselect and load the shirt2.sel go to "colors" "adjust" "brightness/contrast" and change the brightness to -50, deselect. Open the shirt3.sel and back to "colors" "adjust" "brightness/contrast" and change the brightness to 50.... deselect
"Selections" "load from disk" and open the pants.sel, fill with your pattern/color I used my jeans tile above deselect and load the pants2.sel "colors" "adjust" "brightness/contrast" change the brightness to -75 deselect and load the pants3.sel "colors" "adjust" "brightness/contrast" change the brightness to 75 deselect.
"selections" "load from disk" and open the hair.sel fill with a color of your choice, I used the same color as his shoes, deselect.
"selections" "load from disk" and open the hat1.sel fill with your choice of color/pattern I used the same jeans tile, deselect and load the hat2.sel "colors" "adjust" "brightness/contrast" change the brightness to -75 deselect and load the hat3.sel "colors" "adjust" "brightness/contrast" change the brightness to 75 deselect.
"selections" "load from disk" open the hat4.sel fill with same color/pattern deselect and load the hat5.sel "colors" "adjust" "brightness/contrast" change the brightness to -75 deselect and load the hat6.sel "colors" "adjust" "brightness/contrast" change the brightness to 75 deselect.
"selections" "load from disk" open the pockets.sel fill with a lighter color than your jeans I used #E4E7EA, then go to "selections" "modify" "contract" change the number to 1 and fill this selection with the same color/pattern you used on his jeans deselect and load the pockets2.sel "colors" "adjust" "brightness/contrast" change the brightness to -75 deselect and load the pockets3.sel "colors" "adjust" "brightness/contrast" change the brightness to 75 deselect.
Now you can add anything else you might want I added a picture of a teddy bear on his hat and a slingshot in his back pocket...
